Homage A Languichatte Debordus

Posted: 05:31 PM ET

When Americans were watching the Jeffersons, Haitian people were watching Languichatte Au 20eme Siecle.

Watch this Belfim exclusive video: Homage a Languichatte Debordus, Part 1

Yes...

Languichatte Debordus was our Georges Jefferson..

Theodore Beaubrun is a name that is not mention often these days but if you are over the age of 35 and you spent your childhood in Haiti, I am sure you know who Languichatte Debordus is.

When I was a kid, I would not miss Languichatte on Wednesdays and Friday nights on Television National D'Haiti. "Languichatte Au XXieme Siecle" and "La Vi Nan Bouk" were the only Haitian Creole TV sitcoms back in the days. They were funny.

Azibe, dlo cho!

Melanie cafe!

Georges & Baba Company, the two "con men" in the show

Where is Azibe?

Where is Melanie?

What happened to Mantoute?

Where is Lolotte?

Are their still alive?

Are they still doing comedy?

Where are their now?

Can Banabe still act?

Watch this video and find out: Homage a Languichatte Debordus, Part 1

Do you know how he got the stage name Languichatte?

I will tell you today because I was there last year at the Parc Historique De La Canne A Sucre when there where commemoration him; this is where I heard it for the first time...

Theodore Beaubrun was looking for a great stage name when a when the next door neighbor's "Geran Lakou" came over and starting and said"

"Vwazin na mande si nou pa gen fey 'Lang Chat' poul li fe yon ti te"

'lang chat' a common leaf in Haiti became Languichatte Debordus, the best Haitain comedian of all time.

Video Link: Watch the video clips from the evening in March 2007 at the Park Historique De La Canne A Sucre, Homage a Languichatte Debordus, Part 1.

Here was my biggest moment of the evening for me:

Raynald Delerme, Baba in Languichatte Au XXeme SiecleI was sitting in the crowd watching a video of the life of Theodore Beaubrun. There were many clips of his sitcom playing on the big screen, clips I had not seen in more then 25 years.

Suddenly it occurred to me...

"Baba" was sitting right next to me...

"Baba" is my friend... Raynald Delerme... The guy who invited me to the event...

I started staring at him.  He looked at me for a good 30 seconds and said: "Woody, are you OK?"

"I used to see you on TV, " I replied in disbelief, "You're my friend now... I am sitting right next to you!"

Sometimes we don't realize how fortunate we are and how honored we should be when we meet a childhood hero.  Growing in Hinche Haiti in the 70's, I never expected to meet the people I only saw on a Black and white television at the neighbor's house, let along call them my friends.

I never met Languichatte. He was... and he always will be... my George Jefferson!

For all of you who were not there that night, there will more videos available soon, you will enjoy them.
