Filmmaker Michelet Paul aims to keep students on right path
The title of Michelet Paul's first English-language film, "Ambition," is a reflection of what he wants young people to have -- and what sometimes steers them in the wrong direction. The film, which tells the story of a young Haitian man who drops out of school and gets involved with drug dealers, premieres at 6 p.m.May 3rd 6pm at club mambo 2368 west oakridge rd Orlando fl 32839 . Paul, who emigrated to the United States from Haiti in 2001, said he hopes the movie is a warning to students tempted to go down the wrong path. "People who come here, they have to work hard, they have to go to school or they have to work hard to be something," said Paul, 31. "It helps the family and stuff like that -- not going on the street and selling drugs and get money fast." The movie, which took five months to write and seven months to film, features 17 local actors and a crew of about six people. Paul has directed two Creole-language films, "Bad Marriage" and "I Want To Go Home," but this is the first film he also wrote. Adam Sorensen, a Norwich resident who did video production for "Ambition," said he has seen similar projects fall apart in the planning stages. But the enthusiasm of Paul and the rest of the participants made "Ambition" a success, he said. "The more and more participation we got, everyone fed off that same energy," Sorensen said. Badeau, the main character, emigrates to America from Haiti with plans to be a millionaire. He enrolls in school but drops out to sell drugs, thinking that is his ticket to riches. The movie ends with a gun shoot-out in a warehouse in which several characters die and at least one goes to prison, Sorensen said. The ending was made to show students that breaking the law has consequences, Paul said, and Sorensen agreed. "Granted, the gang life might be fun, and it might get you somewhere, but it's not going to last," Sorensen said. "There's always consequences to it."
